Why are we releasing new versions of Escuelas Linux on such short notice?
It's because of LibreOffice.
The previous release of Escuelas Linux included LibreOffice 7.3.0, and it ran just fine, at least in our tests on some computer brands.
However, after installing on some other computers, we had become aware that a severe bug appears: LibreOffice Calc refuses to open and crashes the program.
As such an issue has begun to appear on many computers, we believe it prevents our users from having a trouble-free experience.
We could have released a Fix Pack, but not everybody is aware that we have such a mechanism in place. Our official ISO images would still be downloaded, thus reproducing such a potential problem.
For the reasons stated, we announce the availability of Escuelas Linux 7.4 64-bit and Escuelas Linux 6.18 32-bit. Both releases include LibreOffice 7.3.1, in which this issue is solved.
As we are releasing entirely new versions of Escuelas Linux, we took this opportunity to update some other apps to have an even better OS:
-Balena Etcher 1.7.7
-Blender 3.0.1
-Firefox 97
-IBM Java 8.0-7.5
-GCompris 2.3.1
-Google Chrome 99
-Minetest 5.5
-Mixxx 2.3.2
-OBS Studio 27.2.1
-Scratch 3.29.1
-Wine 7.3
-Winetricks 20211230
-Zoom 5.9.6
The Escuelas Linux Developer Pack remains at its 7.3 version and can be installed on Escuelas Linux 7.4 64-bit.
Escuelas Linux 7.4 64-bit and 6.18 32-bit are available for download right now at:
https://osdn.net/projects/escuelaslinux/releases/
Once there, download the .z01 and .zip files for the architecture and language that you'd like to use:
-32-bit for relatively old computers with more than 700 MB of RAM and less than 3 GB, or 64-bit for computers equal to or more than 3 GB of RAM and/or UEFI-based ones.
-Your preferred language (English or Spanish).
HOW TO GENERATE YOUR ISO IMAGE
-On Windows and Escuelas Linux systems, uncompress with the file manager ONLY the .zip file to generate the ISO image.
-On macOS (Intel), you should install The Unarchiver app and uncompress ONLY the .z01 file to generate the ISO image.
-On Linux distributions that cannot handle the uncompression of split zip files in their file manager, open a terminal and type the following commands:
cd {path and folder name where the zip and z01 files are} (enter)
zip -s- escuelaslinux*zip -O todo.zip (enter)
unzip todo.zip (enter)
If you have computers between 512 and 700 MB of RAM, then download Escuelas Linux 6.18 LowMem! Check the Installation Manual to know how to setup it.
The 7.4 and 6.18 Installation Manual is available in English and Spanish languages:
