Project Description

Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa, IMAP, and POP. It is compatible with the 2.4.25 kernel, ebtables, and brouter (bridging router). It also comes with denial of service protection.

This release ports the LBA to the 2.4.25 kernel and tests it
with ebtables. This means you can now have the full
featured shaping of the LBA running with a router on the
same hardware sharing the same ethernet cards. This
version also makes the arbitrator code into a series of hooks
which will make it much easier to port to the kernel of your
choice. Finally the 2.4.25 kernel offers a broad range of
support for new ethernet drivers

This release introduces persistence of hard limits. This means that
settings for hard limits will remain if the system is rebooted. It also
provides a method for MAC address authentication and redirection. You
can now use the Bandwidth Arbitrator to redirect unknown MAC addresses
on your network to an alternate Web site.

A section was added to the guide with details on
how to do MAC address authentication and
redirection. You can now use the LBA to limit
access to a wireless hotspot and automatically
direct unauthorized users to "a sign" up Web site.
The guide has also been put online, so it is no
longer necessary to download the whole thing at
once. Finally, the guide has been updated so that
it is consistent with version 8.22 GPL.

This version is now up to date with the 8.22 GPL. It has also combined the ability to do host limiting with QOS. This allows the QOS release, which formally did not allow bandwidth limiting by host, to provide QOS for voice traffic while at the same time allowing you to set bandwidth cap limits for up to 500 individual hosts.
