Project Description

Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa, IMAP, and POP. It is compatible with the 2.4.25 kernel, ebtables, and brouter (bridging router). It also comes with denial of service protection.

This release allows you set a connection limit for all hosts in your network. Essentially you can now tell the arbitrator, with one rule, to keep all hosts in your network from initiating or receiving more than a set amount of connections. This is a very powerful way of inoculating your entire network from a variety of denial of service attacks, as well as keeping connection-happy p2p applications from overwhelming your router.

This release includes support for Intel Pro 10/100/1000 LAN cards. The bootable CD distribution will now run on almost all modern computer systems with built in LAN cards. The Ethereal packet sniffing utility has been added, as well as the ability to run Linux commands directly from the GUI admin screen.

The user guide now has a section on how to use the
Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator to prevent viruses from
entering your network. The new section describes
how to use the existing content filter utility to
completely block viruses embedded in attachments.
There is also a new table in the tuning tips
section, detailing values to set for the
PENALTY_UNIT parameter (packet delay) based on the
speed of your trunk.

This release introduces a simple key mechanism which will allow you to
build systems with a bandwidth restriction for the final working system.
Essentially, you can create a key mechanism that will allow an admin
with knowledge of the key to set upper bandwidth limits which the final
system cannot exceed. It does require a kernel compilation.

The GUI has been enhanced with the ability to get
instant snapshots of P2P application use. The
ability to look at each IP address and its
associated MAC address also has been added. The
flash has been updated with the latest 7.64 GPL.
The 7.64 GPL was re-done to work around a flaw in
Perl script interprocess signaling, thus bringing
more stability to the release.
