Project Description

Linux FreeS/WAN provides IPSEC (IP Security, which is both encryption and authentication) kernel extensions and an IKE (Internet Key Exchange, keying and encrypted routing daemon) as well as various rc scripts and documentation. It is known to interoperate with other IPSEC and IKE system already deployed by other vendors such as OpenBSD, Cisco, or CheckPoint. It also features Opportunistic Encryption, subnet extrusion, and with the appropriate patches interops nicely with Microsoft Windows XP/2000 using X.509 certificates.

1.4

A nasty bug in which a corrupted sequence number in a packet could paralyze a connection, causing all subsequent packets to be rejected as "duplicate", has been fixed. In the absence of an existing /etc/ipsec.secrets, installation includes automatic generation of an RSA host key. Startup and shutdown are now quieter, with less blow-by-blow narrative from ipsec_setup. ipsec.conf include processing has been made much more efficient, as the first step in faster FreeS/WAN startup in large configurations. As usual, there are assorted small bug fixes and improvements to docs and messages.
