GLib is a library containing many useful C routines for things such as trees, hashes, and lists. GLib was previously distributed with the GTK toolkit, but has been split off as of the developers' version 1.1.0.

Atomic operations were rewritten from scratch to make use of gcc builtins where possible. A full set of atomic operations on pointers was added, including bit locks in pointer-size locations. Access to quarks is now lockless. GObject data scalability was greatly improved. Other improvements and many bug fixes were made.
