Project Description

MeshLab is an open, portable, extensible system for the user-assisted processing of unstructured 3D meshes. The system is aimed to help the processing of 3D models arising in 3D scanning, providing a set of tools for cleaning and healing this kind of meshes. The system is heavily based on the VCG library developed at the Visual Computing Lab of ISTI - CNR, for all the core mesh processing tasks.

1.1.0

This version introduces many important and
appealing new features. The most notable
improvements are the possibility of managing
multiple meshes on different layers and the new
features for the processing of raw 3D scanning
data. ICP alignment and Poisson based merging of
multiple range maps is now possible within
MeshLab. Another important development of MeshLab
1.1.0 is the added support for output in the
compressed U3D format. This format also allows the
creation of captivating PDF documents with
embedded interactive 3D objects using LaTeX.

1.0.0

This release adds various new filtering tools and exposes more options for existing filters. The stability and robustness of I/O mesh filters have been greatly improved. Various kind of non-standard variations of known formats are now also parsed. Automatic cleaning of loaded STL was added. A major enhancement is the powerful interactive painting system that allows you to interactively change the color of a mesh, define selections, and even directly smooth out noise and small features.

Many bugs have been corrected. Notably, in the previous release, object loading had a lot of problems. Support for the WRL and SMF file formats (write only) and the PTX file format (read only) has been added. The quality and robustness of Hole Filling filter have been greatly improved: now large and non-manifold holes can be handled.

Many new filters have been added, notably the high
quality simplification, better feature preserving
smoothing, automatic hole filling, and a first
surface-from-points reconstruction algorithm.
Support for the Collada file format has been
added, and many OpenGL shaders have been rewritten
or improved.

Selection and editing of large meshes is now
possible. MeshLab now records and replays
sequences of filter applications. All filter
classes were restructured, so now filters are
assigned to different submenus. The Clustering
simplification algorithms were totally rewritten.
Shaders were debugged, and the choice of initial
modes was improved. Intrusive progress bars were
eliminated.
