Project Description

mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito) disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored on another disk, NFS/CIFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or system intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning, which allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition layout itself). Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs, XFS, and JFS filesystems are supported. It can restore disks in Software RAID and LVM mode. It supports the One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR) mode, which simulates a bootable CD-ROM on tape.

0.5.8

This is a rather stable release, and is free from the 'permission denied' problems after booting from CD-ROM. All known (reported) problems have been fixed, and there is a small utility available to reboot (alt-ctrl-del or ctrl-alt-del) the system when the busybox reboot fails. CD-Rewritables are properly supported (with auto eject capabilities). Furthermore, IDE RAID support has been enhanced and will be detected when trying to restore the system. Initial GRUB supported is included (but may not be complete yet).

0.5.7

Busybox and syslinux have been updated to the latest version. Lots of bugs were fixed. mkCDrec utilities v0.5.7 will trigger mkCDrec to use isolinux as the boot method instead of syslinux. CD-RWs are supported from this release. Extra verbose output has been inserted into linuxrc to improve bug tracing.

0.5.6

The exclude directories bug has been fixed, as well as some minor bug reports from users. The start-up phase has been modularized so that it is easier to plug-in start-up scripts. The CD writer detection part has been rewritten in test.sh. Automatic resizing of the partition layout used by the cloning script has been slightly improved. A cramfs initial ramdisk (still beta) used by Debian 2.4-based kernels is included. More tools were added to the binaries list.
