Project Description

MPlayer is a movie and animation player that supports a wide range of codecs and file formats, including MPEG 1/2/4, DivX 3/4/5, Windows Media 7/8/9, RealAudio/Video up to 9, Quicktime 5/6, and Vivo 1/2. It has many MMX/SSE(2)/3Dnow(Ex) optimized native audio and video codecs, but allows using XAnim's and RealPlayer's binary codec plugins, and Win32 codec DLLs. It has basic VCD/DVD playback functionality, including DVD subtitles, but supports many text-based subtitle formats too. For video output, nearly every existing interface is supported. It's also able to convert any supported files to raw/divx/mpeg4 AVI (pcm/mp3 audio), and even video grabbing from V4L devices.

Fixes for the long-standing fullscreen switching issues with the X11-based drivers (x11, xv, xmga, and xvidix), output support for DXR2 cards and animated GIF89a files, merging and rewriting the manpages of mplayer & mencoder to be more usable as quick reference and easier to understand, a new filter which detects black bands and prints optimal CROP parameters, and official RPM packages.

This prerelease, which is unusually close to the last one, contains major fixes for some serious bugs reported by pre1/pre2 users. The most important bug was dropping an audio (and sometimes a video) packet after seeking, causing A-V desync with some AVI files, and also image distortions with most MPEG files. libmpdvdkit in pre2; unfortunately, its default CFLAGS triggered a bug in the gcc 3.x compiler, miscompiling the code. As a workaround, libmpdvdkit optimization flags have been reduced. The DGA driver was reported to be broken, and is fixed now. Several small GUI fixes and cleanups have been done.

This release includes various AC3, HWAC3, and PCM audio-out fixes. 2-pass encoding and B-frames are now possible with libavcodec, and full-screen switching and -rootwin are fixed with most X11 drivers. A problem with the DivX audio DLL under glibc 2.1 has been fixed, and support for many Win32 DLLs added, including MSS1, TM20, UCOD, and TrueSpeech. This version also introduces mpdvdkit, a patched kit of dvdread and dvdcss libraries. Seeking .ogg files is now faster, and various OpenBSD and NetBSD patches have been applied.

In this release, runtime CPU detection has been implemented. The video codec layer has been rewritten, now capable to provide Direct Rendering and expanded by filtering, so you can crop, expand, scale etc. Moving the subtitles under the image on the black bands is now possible. Audio-only playback, and audio playback from external file has been added. The number of supported movie and subtitle fileformats have been increased, most importantly including .ogg video and VobSUB. The libavcodec has also been improved.
