Project Description

Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a utility for network exploration, administration, and security auditing. It uses IP packets in novel ways to determine which hosts are available online (host discovery), which TCP/UDP ports are open (port scanning), and what applications and services are listening on each port (version detection). It can also identify remote host OS and device types via TCP/IP fingerprinting. Nmap offers flexible target and port specifications, decoy/stealth scanning for firewall and IDS evasion, and highly optimized timing algorithms for fast scanning.

In this version, an exciting new "version detection"
feature was added so that nmap interrogates TCP or UDP
ports to determine what service is really listening. In
many cases it can detect the application name and
version number as well. The database already supports
378 service signatures representing 86 unique service
protocols. It can scan through SSL encryption, brute
force RPC program numbers, and supports IPv6. The
output table is now more concise. Many dozens of
bugfixes, minor features, and portability enhancements
were also made.

The largest-ever OS fingerprint update was implemented. Roughtly 300 fingerprints were added or modified. These massive changes span the gamut from AIX 5.1 to the ZyXEL Prestige broadband router line. Notable updates include OpenBSD 3.3, FreeBSD 5.1, Mac OS X 10.2.6, Windows 2003 server, and more WAPs and broadband routers than you can shake a stick at. Someone even submitted a fingerprint for Debian Linux running on the Microsoft Xbox. The fingerprint database now contains almost 1000 fingerprints.

This version fixes several bugs which could cause Nmap to crash, as well as a few less serious ones. All support for SCO operating systems has been dropped. The NmapFE graphical frontend has been updated to reflect newer Nmap options.

This version includes a port to Amiga and also fixes Mac OS X compilation. It also fixes a heap corruption bug which led to crashes when scanning large networks, and another bug which broke UDP and small-fragment scanning on FreeBSD and certain other non-Linux, non-Win32 platforms.
