Project Description

PIKT is cross-categorical, multi-purpose software
for monitoring and configuring computer systems,
administering networks, organizing system
security, and much more. PIKT is intended
primarily for system monitoring, and secondarily
for configuration management, but its versatility
and extensibility evoke many other wide-ranging
uses. PIKT consists of a sophisticated,
feature-rich file preprocessor; an innovative
scripting language with unique labor-saving
features; a flexible, centrally directed process
scheduler; a customizing file installer; a
collection of powerful command-line extensions;
and other useful tools.

1.7.0

Enhanced ease of use by adding a new simplified configs_starter file set, using macro tricks to reduce config file clutter, introducing preprocessor line indentation, adding more helpful commentary and debugging, introduced a new application for documentation management and text formatting, fixed several non-trivial bugs and made a port to HP-UX.

1.6.0

Added a new piktc option, -X, for remote execution but with no wait; added another new piktc option, +C "...", for remote execution of command-line commands (like a smart, macro-aware rsh/ssh); considerably reduced the overhead for most piktc commands, making them run faster; allowed for partial configurations with subsets of the eight basic config files; added over a dozen new script language functions; made other up-front and behind-the-scenes improvements; fixed some minor bugs.

1.5.0a

Added a new piktc option, -x, for exec'ing PIKT scripts remotely; added another new piktc option, -f, for diffing the master configuration against client-side files (has important security uses); introduced a new flowcontrol keyword, 'leave'; increased system robustness and fixed several bugs; added more validation self-tests and config samples.

1.4.0b

Fixed a Makefile glitch that caused a compilation failure
on some Linux systems; fixed a few mistakes in the documentation.

1.4.0

Introduced a new config file, files.cfg, for managing any system (text) file (e.g., /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/syslog.conf, /etc/sudoers); much improved security via user-configurable service access parameters and server-client callback; dozens of new validation self-tests; bug fixes.
