Download List

Project Description

Plait (pronounced "play") is a command-line jukebox and music player front end. It understands brief, easy to type queries that pick a single song, mix queries that combine works from multiple artists, and stream queries that find Shoutcast radio streams. A variety of filters are available to pick just the music you want to hear. In order to actually play the music it finds, Plait automatically hands off a playlist to one of the supported music players, or creates a playlist that you can manually load.

This is a bugfix release for "plaiter", the
command line front end for command line music
players. In the previous release of "plaiter", the
controller sent relative file paths to the player
daemon, which meant that they had to run in the
same directory. This release sends absolute file
paths.

This release introduces "Plaiter" (pronounced "player"), a commandline
frontend to commandline music players. It complements "plait", but is
also quite useful on its own, especially if you already use mpg123 or
similar programs. In addition to the features of mpg123, "Plaiter"
queues tracks, understands commands like play, pause, stop, next, and
prev, and can handle a playlist with more than one type of audio file,
selecting the proper helper application to handle each type of file you
throw at it.

This release adds suppport for music players on
Linux, including mpg123, mpg321, and XMMS. The
dependency on the GNU versions of awk and find was
removed. This release should also run on various
BSDs and other versions of Unix, although it has
only been tested on Linux.

This release adds support for complex queries
against the Shoutcast station directory, including
multiple hints, mixes, and the ability to exclude
stations with the "not" keyword. These features
allow much more selective searching. This release
also removes all dependencies on Bash. Plait will
now run on any Bourne-compatible shell. Testing
shows a 40% reduction in execution time when
running the script with Ash on Cygwin versus Bash
on Cygwin. No bugs were found since the last
release.

This release adds support for mix files, a new technique for categorizing your music. Mix files have the flexibility of play lists and the dynamic nature of picking tracks by genre. A more flexible syntax that allows hints and options to be mixed freely on the command line was implemented. Play list naming in iTunes was improved. More robust error handling was added along with minor bugfixes.
