Project Description

Potrace is a utility for tracing a bitmap (that is, transforming a bitmap into a smooth, scalable image). The input is a portable bitmap (PBM), and the default output is an encapsulated PostScript file (EPS). A typical use is to create EPS files from scanned data, such as company or university logos, handwritten notes, etc. The resulting image is not "jaggy" like a bitmap, but smooth. It can then be rendered at any resolution.

1.4

A bug was fixed which caused potrace to "hang" on large input files. Some bugs in the compression code were also fixed. The presence of the "compress" program is now determined at run-time, rather than compile-time, to allow pre-compiled versions to work anywhere.

1.3

This is primarily a bugfix release. A bug which
caused potrace to crash when applied to an empty
(all white) bitmap was fixed. The options -2 and
-3 are now ignored when unsupported, rather than
causing an error. The bounding box in the xfig
backend was fixed, and the PostScript output now
has better page encapsulation. Bitmaps of
dimension 0 are now tolerated better. There were
improvements to the test suite, autoconfiguration,
and portability.

1.2

This release includes backends for gimp and xfig. A
separate program, mkbitmap, was added for turning
greyscale or color images into high-quality input to
potrace. Two new options were added, --opaque and --
group, to give greater flexibility in generating editable
PostScript and SVG output. The bitmap decomposition
algorithm now runs better on 64-bit platforms.
Portability and autoconfiguration were vastly improved,
and a test suite was added. Runlength encoded BMP
files can now be read.

1.1

An SVG (scalable vector graphics) backend was
added. PGM, PPM, and BMP file formats are now
supported A speed improvement of up to 3.3 on
some large files was achieved. New --blacklevel
and --invert options were added to control how
color images are converted to bitmaps.
Autoconfiguration and error messages were
improved.
