Project Description

Visopsys is an alternative operating system for PC compatible computers. Under development since late 1997, this system is small, fast, and open source. It features a simple but functional graphical interface, real preemptive multitasking, and virtual memory. Though it attempts to be compatible in a number of ways, Visopsys is not a clone of any other operating system. You can demo the distribution from a "live" CD, USB stick, or floppy disk.

0.41

This is supplemental/bugfix release, with some
added features, including the ability of the Disk
Manager to move partitions in contiguous space
(i.e. it can "slide" them from side to side), a
configuration file editor, and a program for
choosing keyboard layout. A number of tweaks were
also made to the graphical components and GUI user
settings, such as clickable slices in the Disk
Manager, "color chooser" dialog boxes, and an
optional desktop clock.

0.4

This release includes lots of graphical interface
improvements, new GUI widgets, numerous API
refinements, better "newbie" usability, and
bugfixes. The Disk Manager program has been
significantly enhanced, and several system
management applications have been added. This
release also rolls up beta features from the 0.3x
series, including bootable ISO/CD-ROM support,
read-only EXT2/3 filesystem support, and better
kernel heap management.

0.4_PRE2

This is the second pre-release of version 0.4.
Minor enhancements include focus and keyboard
control of checkbox widgets, the unification of
the "reboot" and "shutdown" icons, a proper icon
for the installer, and the display of GPL info at
first boot. Confusing sideways cursor movements
are disabled in the native shell. A bug in the
disk manager's slice selection list was fixed.
Windows bigger than the screen area will now
display properly.

0.33

This is primarily a bugfix release, but with
bootable CD-ROM support added as a new feature.
The download site now offers a bootable ISO image
containing a complete distribution with source
code. Spurious error messages which occurred when
booting from a read-only file system were fixed,
and the kernel heap allocation code was fixed. The
"non-boot" boot sector code no longer reboots the
system, but instead properly calls the next boot
option. Some small CDROM-related bugfixes were
made to the IDE driver.
