VLC media player

This release adds support for new codecs (Dirac,
PNG, Apple Lossless Audio Codec, 20/24 bits LPCM),
file formats (raw AAC and HE-AAC, improved
Matroska, Shoutcast metadata, TiVo) and protocols
(SSL/TLS, SOCKS, Samba, iTunes shares). The Pocket
PC port is complete. New plugins include a
picture-in-picture system, an ActiveX plugin for
Internet Explorer, and a built-in screenshot
taker.

This release resolves a crash with ODML AVI files and fixes many bugs such as the multi-channel audio output and DV/MPEG input on Win32, sub-picture scaling, autodetection of VCD and SVCD binary files, and aspect ratio in the ffmpeg encoder. A few new features were also added, such as SSL support in the HTTP stream output and HTTP interface, and support for playlist group announcements.

This release added support for many new formats (WMV3 under Windows only, Vobsub, DVB subtitles, and JPEG) as well as new input and output methods (screen capture, Windows Media Server RTSP, and OpenGL). The input and transcoding layers were rewritten to allow multi-input and transcoding at any stage of the pipeline. A new plugin cache system improved launch times.

VLC now supports AACPlus webstreams, MPEG-PS
streams containing MPEG-4 video, multi-channel WAV
muxing, and VobSub subtitles. New video filters
were added: timestamp, subpicture, marquee. This
release also improves the seeking precision in the
input, the multi-input and the RTSP/VoD server.

This release fixed a lot of stability issues and vastly
improved the GUI with a new streaming wizard and
OSD widgets. Support for new formats and input
methods (iTMS previews, MJPEG webcams, Windows
Media Server RTSP, Kasenna MediaBase) were added
along with new codecs (G.726 audio, 14496-17 MPEG
TS and MPEG-4 text and colour DVB subtitles, SVG
rendering). Screen capture (with streaming) is now
supported, and many new JavaScript hooks were
added to the Mozilla plugin.
