Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer, or "packet sniffer", that lets you capture and interactively browse the contents of network frames. It provides a commercial-quality packet analyzer for Unix, and the most useful packet analyzer on any platform.

Ethereal can now read traces made from Lucent/Ascend WAN routers and Gzipped trace files of any format, decoders have been added for the Internet Cache Protocol and the Internet Printing Protocol, updated decoders include OSI/CLNP, x.25, lapb, token-ring, ethernet, fddi, token-ring MAC, NetBIOS, NBT, NBIPX, ICMP, and IPX SAP, and printing has been enhanced, as well as the ability to decode packets and capture packets concurrently.
