Tfb 24.0.1b menu issue (2013-11-07 03:58 by RLR #70721)

I started doing some testing of Tfb 24.0.1b this afternoon and the results have mostly been positive. Tfb 24.0.1b feels more snappy to me than 17.0.10. I just ran across an issue, however. Focus was in a new message window and I noticed that all of the items in the Edit dropdown menu were grayed out, then realized that this was also the case for the Edit, View, Options, Tools and Window menus. The Tenfourbird and Help menus appeared to be normal. The CMD-R keyboard shortcut still worked and I presume this would have been the case for other shortcuts. When I changed the focus to the mailbox window, the menus returned to normal. When I changed focus back to the message window, however, all of the items were once again grayed out. Quitting and restarting Tfb 24.0.1b seems to have resolved the issue. Now the menus are working normally even when focus is in a message window.

I encountered this bug.

On my Mac (G5 10.5.8), The following instruction could repair gray outed menus:

1. On New message compose window, open Toolbar customize dialog.
2. Close customize dialog.

I still not figure out why customize dialog could repair gray outed menus...

Very interesting. I assumed that opening the customize toolbar dialog would only fix the problem temporarily, but I haven't seen the grayed out menus since opening the dialog--even after quitting and restarting Tfb.

Nice work getting Tfb 24 off of the ground, by the way!

I spoke too soon. The grayed out menus returned after I typed a longer message.

Currently, I cann't reproduce this bug frequently... It happened only once. It may take long time...
I thought I could fix this bug before v24.1.0. But I gave up... I will release v24.1.0 before fixing this bug.

If this bug related to TenFourFox Issue 248, v24.1.0 is solution.
If not, I should type many many no-sending-mails to reproduce this bug :-<

I can certainly understand your frustration. Although it would seem that I'm able to reproduce the bug much more frequently, I haven't been able to get any handle on what triggers it. There are times when I can repeatedly open new message windows and/or send new messages and not trigger the problem, similar to what you're seeing. Many times, though, the menus are grayed out once I open the second or third new message window after starting Tfb.

RE: Tfb 24.0.1b menu issue (2013-11-13 19:59 by RLR #70798)

I just started and tested Tfb about 15 times and the problem was triggered every time when I opened a second new message window after sending one message. Sending a message seems to be important. This behavior is reproducible for me in limited testing:

1) start Tfb
2) open a new message window and fill in the To and Subject fields and enter some text in the body, but do not send the message
3) repeat step 2) three times
4) change focus to each of the new message windows and the menus are NOT grayed out
5) send one of the messages
6) change focus to each of the remaining new message windows and the menus are NOT grayed out
7) open an additional new message window and the menus are now grayed out, but only while focus is in this last new message window that was created after sending a message
8) change focus back to the original new message windows that were created before sending a message and the menus are NOT grayed out
9) change focus back to the last new message and the menus are grayed out

It appears that sending a message causes the menus to be grayed out for any additional new message windows that are created afterward. Also, the grayed out menus seem to be tied to specific message windows. If a new message window was created and the menus were not grayed out when focus was in this window, that continues to be the case, even after another new message window is opened and this new message's menus are grayed out.

Unfortunately, Cameron seems to think that this Tfb menu issue is unrelated to TenFourFox Issue 248, so I'm not expecting resolution in Tfb 24.1.0. :(

I could reproduce the bug! Thank you for your very detailed report!
On my environment, password prompt is displayed before sending mail. It is prevented this bug.

After the bug happend, there is another way to open window which menus are not grayed out.

1. Stay open the window which menus are grayed out.
2. Open new window. (this window's menus are living)

This behavior may be caused by window object cache. But the bug may lurk in the code executing after mail sending.

I'm prompted to enter my smtp server's password before sending the first message after startup, as well, but Tfb then remembers the password until the next restart.

Interesting about leaving open a message window with grayed out menus. I hadn't noticed this behavior before, but you're absolutely right. Any additional new message windows opened while the window with grayed out menus is still open have working menus.

RE: Tfb 24.0.1b menu issue (2013-11-14 20:08 by RLR #70824)

Keeping open a message window with grayed out menus doesn't completely resolve the issue. I left Tfb open overnight on my work computer with a message with grayed out menus shrunk to the Dock. The menus worked normally for the first few messages I sent this morning, then were grayed out for the next message. The original message with grayed out menus is still sitting on my Dock. Before I sent this morning's new message with grayed out menus, I opened a couple additional new message windows and the menus worked normally. Once I sent today's message with grayed out menus, new messages (I've only tried opening 3) had working menus. Just to be clear, all of this morning's testing was carried out with the original message with grayed out menus still sitting on my Dock.

RE: Tfb 24.0.1b menu issue (2013-11-16 01:25 by t_mrc-ct #70840)

I found workaround of this bug. Patch could be included in v24.1.0 .

Details of this bug are:

To prevent accidental mail content change, editable fields and menus are disabled before sending mail.
On default, menus and fields are reenabled after mail sending. But menus are not enabled because of unknown issue. This is the grayed out.

For efficiency, If mail compose window is closed, Tenfourbird does not destroy it. window is recycled (cached).

If window's menus are grayed out and it are recycled. next new compose window's menu are grayed out (this window is not realy new, reused).

I still not figure out real cause of this. But I could forcibly enable menus when window reopened.

Thank you for your big help!

So far, so good with 24.1.0b1. I've tested for a bit this morning and have had no issues with grayed out menus. Thanks!
