Project Description

FONTpage is a utility for viewing, managing, and generating images of fonts. It can install and delete per-user fonts as well as (when run as root) system-wide fonts. It displays fonts, has a full alpha-numeric popup window, and allows you to change the font size and color, background color, font face, bold, and italics. It also has the ability to input the text to be displayed, which you can choose to save as a PNG file. It is handy to view fonts and styles quickly, or to make "logo" graphics. And naturally, it is a simple way to try out fonts without dipping into the command line. The source code as well as Slackware packages are available.

System wide font installation and removal is now allowed for the root user. Font installation on a per-user basis is still the default. A problem with text-colors on buttons was fixed, which was due to changes in setting background colors in newer versions of pyGTK. An "about" page popup was added with link to the Absolute site. All other deprecation warnings regarding tooltips and similar issues were cleared up.

A new "Display Font" feature opens a popup window
with the complete alphabet (upper and lower case)
and the digits. The window shows the current font
with the current size, and multiple windows can be
used to compare different fonts. Font size now
scales up to 256 pts (instead of 128). The
configuration file will now track the last window
dimensions when the application is restarted. If
the user font directory directory does not exist,
FONTpage will create one. This is to facilitate
installing and deleting fonts, which FONTpage will
only do on a per-user basis.

This release saves the last settings between sessions. It starts up using the last font, font-size, foreground and background colors, and custom text, as well as remembering where the last directory images were saved and the last directory from which a font was installed (so that those directories are used as a start point for the next time those dialogs appear.) Graphics have been tweaked and the code cleaned up, making the app smaller and faster.
