This commit, https://osdn.net/projects/hengbandforosx/scm/git/hengbandosx/commits/d0364133e7539b51fdf2de76099297ee29ec0c3b , on the english-game-option-edits branch (based off Hengband's develop branch) of the hengbandforosx project fully spells out "highlight" in the English list of options. Since that option doesn't have the longest name, going with the shorter but non-standard "hilite" doesn't seem worth it.
