Details

The *.dxf format for data exchange is not bad, but
there's a better alternative out: STEP (Standard for
the Exchange of Product Model Data).

While *.dxf is a propietary data format, STEP is an ISO
standard. Find out more here:
http://www.steptools.com/library/standard/introduction_to_step.html

The NIST STEP Class Library is available as "public
domain software" (http://ats.nist.gov/scl/).

There are also attempts for directly processing STEP
files on an CNC controller without any modification:
STEP-NC (ISO 14649)
STEP-NC is a worldwide standard developed by the
International Standards Organization (ISO) to extend
STEP so that it can be used to define data for NC
(numeric control) machines.
http://www.ims.org/projects/project_info/step_nc.html

STEP is currently supported by all major propietary
CAD/CAM solutions.
