sendxmpp is a command-line tool which makes
sending xmpp (jabber) messages as easy as sending
mail with the "mail" command. This makes adding IM
to your programs and scripts very easy.

DutchPIPE allows Web developers to make virtual
multi-user "avatar" environments. Each Web page becomes an abstracted environment or location where visitors and other items on the page are visualized. This status is retained as visitors move around. A lot of real-time interaction is possible, resulting in persistent interactive page environments. DutchPIPE uses AJAX and the DOM for the browser, and it works without Java, Flash, plugins, or
firewall adjustments.

IMSpector is a plugin-based transparent IM proxy with monitoring and blocking abilities. It can log to files and databases. It is also able to filter messages using both file and database-driven backends and change their content. Supported protocols include MSN, Jabber/XMPP, ICQ, AIM, IRC, Yahoo!, and Gadu-gadu.

JForum is complete, powerful, database-independent, and multi-threaded forum software. Features include unlimited forums and categories, topic watching, email notification, private messages, user ranking, an advanced permission schema, and moderation options. It provides support for many languages and customizable templates per user.

MAHC is a complex PHP system that installs easily and allows people to chat
using only HTML. Features include multiple rooms, private chat, user colored
chat text, games (checkers, chess, hangman, tictactoe, dicezee, crossword),
private chat, a "weak" AI chat, Inter-chat messaging, selectable MIDI music,
and 3D graphical smilies. The Web server requirements are currently only PHP4
and a crontab facility. The current version is stable, but lacks in
documentation.

Anna is a set of AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language) files that constitute a chat bot. Unlike other Chat Bots, Anna declares herself to be human, and then has a past, personality, and identity built up from there. Anna is designed to win the 2002 Loebner Prize Competition, and is based on the landmark work of the ALICE AI foundation.

J-Lan Communicator is a small application that
facilitates communication between different
hosts on the same local area network. It does
not require a central server and uses very
little bandwidth by taking advantage of a
lightweight protocol and UDP packets.

Hybserv2 is a new and improved version of the now unsupported Hybserv, sporting new features, bugfixes, and more. It is specifically designed for Hybrid IRC servers, but may work with others as well. It includes OperServ, NickServ, ChanServ, MemoServ, StatServ, HelpServ, and Global. Each of the services can be enabled and disabled as necessary.

yChat is an experimental, XML-configurable, HTML template-driven,
fast, very portable, multi-platform, multi-threaded Web-based chat
server daemon which uses multiplexing sockets and supports ncurses and
text-based administration interfaces. It supports MySQL databases and
secure SSL connections using OpenSSL. It is compatible with almost all
modern browsers that support frames and Javascript.

SecureServ is an IRC trojan detector. It's much like a virus scanner,
but aimed at IRC networks. Using several methods, including version
checks, behavior analysis, and general pattern matching, it aims to
detect trojans, viruses, and floodbots which connect to your IRC
network. Its "brains" are based on a "Definition file" which contains
information on how to detect trojans. To update detection for new
trojans, you only have to download a new file.

gtmess is a console MSN Messenger client for Linux and other Unix systems that conform to the POSIX standard. It supports the MSNP9 protocol version. Apart from the basic stuff like file transfers and chat windows, it offers some advanced features like message logging, contact list cleanup, spoofing the typing user (on some clients), and a popup notifier (via Tcl/Tk). It is UTF-8 compliant.
